Stinging Fork

(Soak Creek)

(Piney River trib.)

  First Descent
1994 - Mark Cumnock, Bailey "Big Water" Johnson (OC-1), Jeff Richards (OC-1)

The falls was run as far back as the mid 1970s by Mark Hall, Patrick McNally, and Alan Singley. A photo of their run graced the wall of Bruce Hare's Chattooga Whitewater Shop for many years. The classic picture of Stinging Fork Falls was of Pat McNally, taken by Singley. Pat, Alan, and Mark Hall were there in the mid 70's in the middle of winter, at REALLY high water. They couldn't run anything else, so they hiked in to SF. They all ran it multiple times, and Alan even has a picture of Mark running it backwards, though unintentionally. There is a not-so-good picture of Alan running it around somewhere.

During the 80's A group form Kentucky hiked in there to shoot video for the Whitewater bluegrass fest. Robin fractured his back when he, Bobby Gaar, Danny Tipton and I were there in 1983. Robin landed flat, broke his back, bed ridden for months. A better write up will probably be in Charlie Walbridge's safety archives.

Portage Free Run: Tom Visnius and John Kennedy. On this historic run they got the first descent on: "Go Left & Die, Gorilla , Sunshine, and Nutcracker? (late 80's). At Gorilla, they had planned to catch the eddy in the Notch and ride down the river right shelf to avoid the flume, but it didn’t work. The missed the eddy and ran the flume instead. They called Gorilla “Zoom Flume” and Woody renamed it soon thereafter and it stuck. They were so determined to run everything, they got stuck in the middle of Nutcracker and had to get out of their boats and swim for it.

First Descent - Ron Stewart and Doug Welman, low water and lots of portaging, they boated the upper half of the run (to the confluence) and walked out in the dark

Second Descent- This one was actually the first full descent. Completed by Ron Stewart, Doug Wellman, Scott Shoup(C-1), and Lone Wolf. It was on this run that Ron did the first descent of Stairway To Heaven. He was the only one in the group to run it that day.

Most Runs In 1 Day (6 Runs): Feb 22nd, 2005 - Lane Rankin and Mark Lyle

Shortly after the first two descents Bo Eakens, John Regan and Roger Zabel (ran everything except

Stairway to Heaven: Ron Stewart
Surrealistic Pillow: Tracy Clapp(main line)Accidently?
Surrealistic Pillow: Clay Wright (far right line)
Big Bang - left side John Regan and Roger (both injured?), Big Bang - right side Tracy Clapp
1st Complete Bear Run: Tracy Clapp- Barely missed the last eddy before Surrealistic Pillow, got turned around and ran it backwards, which probably helped him out. There was a log in the rapid and he went right under it with his entire torso leaning over the bow of the boat. An excellent position to be in to get under the log.

Decker's Creek

 Class IV-V

First non-portage descent- Jeff Snyder (usuals were there as well: Roger Zebel, Jesse Whitmore, Jim Snyder, probably not boating though)

Jeff Snyder also picked all the rapids off one at a time in a Squirt Boat! This was in the early squirtboat days before the Snyder's realized these thin glass machines were not the best for steep terrain. Eventually he and his gang turned to the Thrillseeker for steep arenas and pioneered the glass in deep arenas.
